Ask Me Anything (AMA) Sessions

An AMA is a live or time-boxed Q&A where a founder, expert, or team member answers open questions from the community. You can run one on Reddit, LinkedIn, Instagram Live, X Spaces, or Discord. AMAs build trust because the audience watches someone answer without a script and without the option to skip hard questions.

How it works

Most marketing is one-way: the brand picks the message. An AMA lets the audience pick the questions. People see the host think on their feet, admit what they don’t know, and respond to criticism. For a prospect, that is often more convincing than a polished testimonial. Each question and answer can also be reused later as a post, a clip, or an FAQ entry.

How to do it

  1. Pick a host who knows the subject and speaks clearly under pressure, such as a founder, product lead, or senior expert.
  2. Pick the platform your audience already uses: Reddit for tech and startup communities, LinkedIn Live for B2B, Instagram Live for consumer brands, X Spaces for industry talk, Discord for an existing community. On Reddit, get moderator approval well in advance.
  3. Announce the AMA 5 to 7 days ahead. Include the date, time, topic, host, and why the host is worth asking.
  4. Collect questions in advance through a post, email, or form so the session does not start empty.
  5. Prepare facts for predictable topics (metrics, roadmap, industry trends). Do not script answers.
  6. Keep 5 to 10 backup questions from your team. Use them only if audience questions slow down.
  7. Assign a moderator to manage the queue, remove spam, and keep things moving.
  8. Acknowledge every question. If you can’t answer one fully, say when you will follow up. Say so when you don’t know.
  9. After the session, turn the best Q&A pairs into a blog roundup, social posts, FAQ entries, short video clips, and newsletter content.

What to measure

  • Question volume: count unique questions submitted before and during the session.
  • Attendance: record peak concurrent viewers for live formats, or unique participants and upvotes for text threads.
  • Repurposed content performance: track views and traffic from content made from the AMA over the following weeks.

Best practices

  • Answer the hardest questions directly. Viewers watch for how the host handles criticism, and dodging reads as evasive.
  • Open by answering 2 or 3 pre-submitted questions so the session has momentum.
  • Run AMAs on a regular schedule, such as monthly or quarterly, so people come to expect them.

Common pitfalls

  • A host who is uncomfortable without a script. Corporate non-answers damage trust instead of building it.
  • Too little promotion. Low attendance is the most common failure. Promote on every channel you own.
  • Missed follow-ups. Track every promise made during the session and deliver within a week.
