UGC & Q&A Harvesting

Q&A harvesting means collecting the real questions your audience asks and using them to plan content. Sources include support tickets, sales calls, chat logs, and communities such as Reddit, Quora, Stack Exchange, and industry forums. Because the questions come from real people, the content matches what they actually need.

How it works

Keyword tools show search volume, but not the full situation behind a search. A Reddit post asking “How do I stop my Facebook ads from spending the whole budget by noon?” shows the exact problem, the person’s frustration, and their context. The keyword “Facebook ads budget pacing” shows none of that. Answering the question as people phrase it produces more useful pages and surfaces specific searches that keyword tools often miss.

How to do it

  1. List where your audience asks questions: subreddits, forums, Facebook Groups, Discord servers, Stack Exchange sites, support tickets, sales call notes, and chat logs.
  2. Collect questions from each source, by hand or with tools such as AnswerThePublic or a Reddit search tool.
  3. Record each question in a spreadsheet with its exact wording, source, context, and any existing answers.
  4. Group similar questions and tag each group by content type: tutorial, comparison, troubleshooting, or explanation.
  5. Check search demand by running the questions through a keyword tool. Prioritize questions that show up in several sources and have search volume.
  6. Write a page for each priority question. Use the question as the H1 or H2 and answer it in the first paragraph.
  7. Add examples, context, and closely related questions from the same source to make the page complete.
  8. Share recurring questions with product, sales, and support. Repeated questions often point to missing features, common objections, or onboarding gaps.

What to measure

  • Question coverage: share of high-priority question groups that have a published answer page.
  • Top-10 rate: share of Q&A pages ranking in the top 10 for their target question, from a rank tracker.
  • Ticket deflection: change in support tickets on topics after an answer page goes live, from your help desk tags.

Best practices

  • Use the asker’s wording in the title and H1.
  • Add a “Related questions” section with links to other answer pages on the same topic.
  • Review answer pages each quarter and add new questions as they appear.

Common pitfalls

  • Writing pages for questions nobody searches for. Check demand first, or answer them in a help center or FAQ page instead.
  • Copying community answers. Use the questions as prompts and write original, expert answers.
  • Treating harvesting as a one-time project. Questions change as products and practices change.
