YouTube 6-Second Bumper Ads
YouTube bumper ads are non-skippable video ads of up to six seconds that play before, during, or after a video. Because they cannot be skipped and are very short, viewers see the whole ad and are less annoyed by it. Bumpers build awareness through repetition, much like a billboard.
How it works
Six seconds is too short for a story or an argument, and that is the point. Each bumper should leave one thing in memory: a brand name, a tagline, a benefit, or a product image. The creative rule is one message, one visual, one audio cue, with no wasted frames. Bumpers work best to reinforce a brand people already know, tease longer content, or stay visible during busy periods.
How to do it
- Choose one message per bumper: a brand name, tagline, benefit, or product shot.
- Show the brand in the first two seconds. Use bold visuals, short text, and your audio signature.
- Make three to five variations that each cover a different side of the same message.
- In Google Ads, create a Video campaign with an awareness or reach goal and select bumper ads. Target by demographics, interests, or custom segments.
- Set a frequency cap and check reach and frequency each week.
- If you have the budget, run a Brand Lift study to measure recall.
What to measure
- Unique reach: number of unique users who saw at least one bumper.
- Average frequency: impressions divided by unique reach, per week.
- Ad recall lift: difference in ad recall between exposed and control groups in a Brand Lift study.
Best practices
- Show the brand early and keep it on screen.
- Run bumpers with longer skippable ads so the bumpers reinforce the longer message.
- Make each bumper work on its own and as part of the series.
Common pitfalls
- Trying to tell a full story in six seconds.
- Judging bumpers on clicks or conversions. The format is built for awareness and recall.
- Running at frequency too low for repetition to build memory.
