TOFU/MOFU/BOFU Campaign Structure

This structure splits paid campaigns into three funnel stages: top (TOFU), middle (MOFU), and bottom (BOFU). Each stage gets its own creative, targeting, and bidding. Without it, cold audiences get hard-sell ads and ready buyers get awareness content.

How it works

Each stage reflects a different level of awareness and intent.

  • TOFU: cold audiences who may not know your brand or their problem yet.
  • MOFU: warm audiences who are comparing options.
  • BOFU: hot audiences who are ready to buy or choosing a vendor.

Each stage needs its own creative, call to action, landing page, and often bid strategy.

How to do it

  1. Tag every active campaign as TOFU, MOFU, or BOFU based on its audience and the action it asks for.
  2. Check how spend is split across the three stages.
  3. Build TOFU campaigns for cold audiences (broad, interests, or lookalikes) with educational or entertaining content.
  4. Optimize TOFU for low-cost signals such as video views, engagement, or landing page views.
  5. Build MOFU campaigns for warm audiences: video viewers, recent site visitors, and subscribers who have not bought.
  6. Serve MOFU audiences comparison guides, case studies, webinars, or demos. Optimize for leads or content views.
  7. Build BOFU campaigns for hot audiences: cart abandoners, pricing page visitors, and trial users.
  8. Use direct-response creative at BOFU with proof and a clear call to action. Optimize for purchases or qualified leads with target CPA or ROAS bidding.
  9. Set a starting budget split, for example 60/20/20 across TOFU/MOFU/BOFU, and adjust based on how well people move between stages.

What to measure

  • Cost per stage transition: spend needed to move a person into the next stage, such as cost per 50% video viewer or cost per site visitor.
  • Stage-to-stage rate: share of TOFU audience that becomes MOFU, and MOFU that becomes BOFU.
  • Blended CAC vs. BOFU-only CAC: total spend across all stages divided by new customers, compared to BOFU spend alone.

Best practices

  • Exclude MOFU audiences from TOFU campaigns and BOFU audiences from MOFU campaigns.
  • Refresh TOFU creative often. Cold audiences tire of it fastest.
  • Have MOFU creative pick up where TOFU left off, so the story continues.

Common pitfalls

  • Cutting TOFU to fund BOFU. Remarketing pools shrink without new people coming in.
  • Using the same creative at every stage. A testimonial means little to someone who has never heard of you.
  • Judging TOFU by BOFU metrics. Awareness campaigns are not meant to drive direct sales.
