Flyers, Door Hangers & QR Tracking
Flyers and door hangers reach every household in a chosen area at low cost. A QR code with UTM parameters and a dedicated landing page makes the response measurable. You get print’s physical presence with digital tracking.
How it works
Printed pieces cannot be blocked and do not compete with other ads in a feed. The old problem was measurement. Give each campaign or distribution zone its own QR code that points to a tagged URL. Then you can trace visits, leads, and sales back to each zone.
How to do it
- Choose distribution zones by neighborhood, apartment complex, or postal route. In the US, USPS Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) route maps help with this.
- Design the piece around one offer and one call to action. Make the QR code large enough to scan easily (about 1 inch square or larger) with clear space around it.
- Create a dynamic QR code for each zone with UTM tags, for example
utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=zone-a. - Build a landing page that matches the flyer’s offer, acknowledges the scan, and has one action: claim a coupon, book, or request a quote.
- Report scans, conversions, and revenue by zone. Repeat in the zones that respond.
What to measure
- Scan rate: QR scans divided by pieces distributed.
- Landing page conversion rate: completed actions divided by scans.
- Cost per acquisition by zone: print and distribution cost for a zone divided by conversions from that zone.
Best practices
- Use one offer with a deadline, for example “15% off your first cleaning, scan by March 31.”
- Print on heavy stock with clean design. Cheap materials make the business look cheap.
- Add a phone number or text keyword for people who will not scan.
Common pitfalls
- Pointing the QR code at your homepage. You lose tracking and the message match.
- Distributing everywhere instead of in areas that match your customer.
- Not testing the code on several phones before printing.
