One-Click Checkout
One-click checkout lets returning customers buy with a single button by reusing payment and shipping details saved from earlier orders. Every extra checkout step loses some buyers, so removing steps raises conversion. The gain is largest on mobile, where filling in forms is hardest.
How it works
Many abandoned carts are caused by the checkout process, not by price or doubts about the product. Typing an address and card number on a phone is tedious. One-click checkout stores payment details securely as a token and fills everything in, so the time between “I want this” and “I bought this” is seconds.
How to do it
- Pick an accelerated checkout option that fits your platform: Shop Pay on Shopify, or Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a dedicated checkout provider on custom builds.
- Let customers create an account without a password: social login, an email link, or automatic account creation at first purchase.
- Tokenize card details through your payment processor at first purchase. Never store raw card data.
- Show returning customers their saved address and payment method with a single buy button.
- Put the button on product pages as well as the cart. On mobile, make it the main, thumb-sized call to action.
- A/B test placement (product page vs. cart only), button label (“Buy now” vs. “One-click purchase”), and showing the saved address inline.
What to measure
- Checkout conversion rate: completed orders divided by checkouts started, for one-click vs. standard.
- Mobile conversion lift: change in mobile conversion rate after launch, compared with desktop.
- Time to purchase: seconds from clicking buy to order confirmation.
Best practices
- Show a short order summary (item, price, address, payment) before confirming.
- Enable one-click on product pages for single-item purchases.
- Offer Apple Pay or Google Pay to first-time visitors for a near one-click experience without an account.
- Prefill saved details in the standard checkout too.
Common pitfalls
- No confirmation step. Accidental orders lead to support tickets and chargebacks. A brief confirmation screen prevents most of them.
- Desktop only. Mobile is where checkout friction costs the most.
- Requiring full registration first. A password and email verification just move the friction somewhere else.
